A campaign to cut the speed limit through New Galloway’s narrow main street is gathering momentum.Concerns have been voiced for some time that the present 30mph standard is too fast for public safety. The Royal Burgh of New Galloway and Kells Community Council backs a 20mph limit – and sought public support for the move.“Twenty’s Plenty” forms were circulated to every household in the village with an invitation to sign up to the scheme. Results of the survey were given to Councillor Jane Maitland at the community council meeting on Monday night. In all 126 signatures were collected in favour – with just one respondent voicing opposition.Community Council member Lois Aitkenhead told the News: “The community council has been concerned for many years at the speed of vehicles as they come through the burgh.“Councillors believe 20mph would provide safety for pedestrians and cyclists.“We were advised by the council that evidence was required to support the contention that the community council reflected the views of their community.“A form ‘Make Our Streets Safer’ was designed and our community engagement officer, Hayley Edgar, organised the volunteers who delivered the leaflet to every household in New Galloway.“The overwhelming majority of these forms were returned with support for the community council recommendation that New Galloway should have a 20mph limit.”
