Grace Millane killer loses conviction appeal but still gets to keep name secret

British backpacker Grace Millane's killer has lost his appeal against his murder sentence and conviction. However he won a last-ditch bid to keep his name suppressed after going to New Zealand's highest court.

His name suppression had been due to lapse this week. However the Supreme Court made a last-minute order to continue to suppress his identity following his murder conviction until further order of the court, the NZ Herald reports.

Separately, the Court of Appeal dismissed his application to appeal his murder conviction and sentence. The killer had been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum period of 17 years behind bars this February over the Essex graduate's death.
