Five experienced surfers have drowned after a "foam avalanche" struck off the coast of the Netherlands. The group of six went into the sea for surf training at Scheveningen, The Hague, on Monday evening but were later reported missing.
Photos of the search and rescue mission show the beach and lifeguards covered in grey sea foam, which forms when seawater with high levels of algae gets churned up in strong winds.
The Dutch Coast Guard said three people were rescued from the sea on Tuesday, two of whom were later pronounced dead. Two more bodies were found later on Tuesday morning, while a fifth body was seen floating in the waters but out of reach of rescuers.
