Aerial pictures reveal the revolutionary new design of Britain’s biggest ever prison which will hold up to 1,680 inmates. The huge jail in Wellingborough, Northants, has been built in cross-shaped four-storey blocks and is due to open next year.
The cross-shaped buildings mean the corridors are broken up into smaller zones, rather than miles of long landings and walkways.
The design will let staff have more direct contact with prisoners. It marks a radical departure from the traditional K-block-style prisons favoured since Victorian times.
