Face covering rules explained for gyms and sports venues in England

Gyms are set to reopen on Saturday for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown - here's what you need to know about the rules.

Today it becomes compulsory to wear masks or face coverings inside shops in England. Gyms open a day later but customers will not be required to wear masks inside the gym, unless their gym implements its own rules requiring them to do so.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed that gym-goers will not have to cover their faces while working out, Chronicle Live reports.

Speaking earlier this month, he said: "We have not taken a decision to require the wearing of face masks in respect of gyms." Gyms are also urging customers not to wear gloves while exercising.
