England stars were left stunned after being booed by Hungarian kids for taking a knee in the Puskas Arena. The Nations League clash was supposed to have taken place behind closed doors due to UEFA sanctions against Hungary for previous acts of racism from supporters.
But up to 30,000 teenagers under the age of 14 had been given free tickets and allowed to attend the game, accompanied by 3,000 adults. And the home fans brought shame on the sport when they jeered Gareth Southgate's players for taking a knee before kick off.
The Three Lions had also been booed when coming out to warm up and were abused when some of them had possession or got fouled to earn free kicks. The depressing events will prove to be a huge embarrassment to UEFA, who has allowed the teenagers to attend the game.
There was a huge banner draped across the third tier of the stadium with the words "Equal Game - Respect", but it had no impact whatsoever. The English National Anthem was spared booing, but the shocking events before and during the game will have left Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate upset.
