El Chapo, the brutal cartel leader who is thought to have ordered hundreds of murders, communicated with his henchmen using the same sophisticated phone technology as Brit crimelord Robert Dawes.
The crime boss, whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán, kitted out his gang with customised handsets with an encrypted SIM installed.Each was set up with a “self-destruct” so that it could be completely wiped with a special kill-code text if it ever fell in to the hands of police.
In the end, the notorious leader of the Sinaloa drugs cartel himself fell into the hands of police. After two daring escapes from custody in 2001 and 2015, he was arrested and extradited to the US in 2016, where he stood trial for 10 charges, including murder, drug trafficking.
