Pothole-plagued local roads are drivers' biggest motoring concern, a survey suggests today. An RAC poll of 3,068 motorists indicated 38% were stressed by the condition and maintenance of roads in their communities.

The figure is up from 33% in 2019 and ahead of other issues such as motorists using handheld phones, cited by 32%; the standard of other people's driving, highlighted by 27%; and aggressive behaviour by other road users, mentioned by 26%.

Fifty-two per cent of those surveyed believed local roads were worse than 12 months ago, compared with 49% at last year's survey.

Only 6% of drivers think conditions have improved. Motorists based in rural areas were more likely to say local roads have worsened.
