The Telegraph calculates that 47,050 fashion retail jobs have been lost in the last year, thanks to large casualties such as the closure of Debenhams stores, and the division and sale of Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia group. When shops finally are able to reopen on 12th April, it may become unavoidably, visually clear to see exactly what our once-vibrant high street parades look like now.
The lights may well remain out in many shop fronts - stores from Topshop to Oasis, Debenhams to John Lewis, which occupy streets and centres from Penzance to Inverness, will all be gutted. The half-empty ghost-towns that remain will likely find it even harder to entice shoppers back for an appealing day of browsing.
