Coronavirus second wave warning as students could make universities 'new care homes'

One million students could trigger a coronavirus second wave by moving around the country when they return to university, unions fear.

The academics' union UCU is urging universities to scrap face-to-face teaching until Christmas to avoid a second wave. It described the prospect of more than a million students moving around the country in September when they return as "a recipe for disaster".

Leader Jo Grady said universities were not prepared, and risked becoming the "care homes of the second wave". But universities insist they have worked hard to plan for a safe return for students.
