The spending limit for contactless card payments will jump to £45 on April 1, under emergency measures to reduce cash handling amid the coronavirus outbreak.
From next month, consumers will begin to see an increasing number of retailers accepting contactless card payments up to the new £45 limit.
The decision to raise the limit was taken following consultation between the retail sector and the finance and payments industry and follows similar increases in several other European countries, including Greece and Malta, over the past week.
It comes after a number of retailers - including pubs and supermarkets - last week urged customers to consider contactless payments to reduce cash handling.
