Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that the banning of the major sporting events is under consideration as it would alleviate the pressure currently placed on public services.
The PM was speaking at a press conference following the outbreak of the coronavirus in the UK when he said that while the government has no immediate plans to cancel mass gatherings they will look to postpone any significant future sporting fixtures.
Apart from the Premier League, every one of Europe's top five leagues has either postponed games or put matches behind closed doors.
