Colin Farrell is almost unrecognisable in stills taken from new BBC Two drama The North Water . Sporting a bushy black beard and long, straggly hair the Irish actor looks a world away from the well-groomed star his fans are used to seeing at the Hollywood box office.

The In Bruges star plays harpooner Henry Drax in the adaptation of Ian McGuire's book from award-winning writer and director Andrew Haigh.

The five-part series, which is set in Hull and on the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s also features Stephen Graham, Jack O'Connell and veteran actor Tom Courtenay as the ship’s owner Baxter.
