Victims of one of Britain’s worst child abuse scandals have shared a record £71.5million in compensation, it has emerged. Lambeth council released the total paid to hundreds of former children’s homes residents on the eve of a damning report by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.
Among those who have faced criticism are the Metropolitan Police, the Social Services Inspectorate and local politicians and officials.
Children were systematically abused by paedophiles who targeted jobs in the care system to gain access to young people, the inquiry heard.
And paedophile John Carroll was allowed to remain in his job as boss of one care home, despite senior officials learning he had a conviction for child sexual abuse in 1986.
