Former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg filled in for Jimmy Kimmel Thursday without a studio audience as other late night hosts took similar precautions because of coronavirus concerns.The former South Bend, Indiana, mayor joked, 'When you don't have a real audience, you have to fake one, just like Trump's inauguration,' in a reference to US President Donald Trump having pictures of his inauguration edited to show larger crowds.Instead of a studio audience, Buttigieg had a small group of Kimmel's staffers and a few guests, including his husband Chasten.Pete Buttigieg just hosted Jimmy Kimmel live. 10/10.

The months ahead may put — more strongly than in our lifetimes so far — the adage “the show must go on” to the test, and may indeed break it for good. One example: Pete Buttigieg’s booking as the guest host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” just as talk shows began their process of shedding audiences before shutting entirely for an indefinite period in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.
