Camilla Parker Bowles will wear an adapted crown at King Charles III’s coronation ceremony in May instead of getting a newly commissioned piece, Buckingham Palace has announced.The Queen Consort will have Queen Mary’s crown adapted to fit her head, which will make it the first time in recent history that a royal has adapted a crown with a former wearer.The palace said the Queen Consort’s decision to adapt an existing crown was made “in the interests of sustainability and efficiency”.READ MORE: Kate Middleton's two 'off-script' hugs in one day could 'prove Meghan Markle wrong'Buckingham Palace said Queen Mary’s Crown has been removed from its display at the Tower of London in order to be adapted.It will be fitted with several diamonds that Queen Elizabeth had in her personal collection before she died.She also often wore the diamonds, known as the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds, as brooches.Queen Mary’s Crown was worn by the consort of King George V during his 1911 coronation.The decision to reuse Queen Mary’s crown is the first time a Queen Consort’s crown has been re-used since the 18th Century, when Queen Caroline, consort of George II, wore Mary of Modena’s crown.
Meanwhile, St Edward’s Crown, a centuries-old crown that has been used to pass on the title of monarch from one to another, has now returned to public display at the Tower following modification work needed for King Charles III’s coronation.
