Brits abroad roast in 40C heat as 'intense' mutant heatwave strikes Spain

holidaymakers are roasting in a freak heatwave as temperatures in Spain soar to a whopping 40C.Tourists have been warned that it is dangerously hot and they should avoid physical activity and wear lose clothing.Weather experts have described it as “one of the most intense heatwaves” and credited the burning mercury to an African plume arriving from across the continent.

Much-loved holiday hotspots for UK sunseekers – including Seville, Cordoba and Granada – have enjoyed the scorching rays with temperatures hitting a new record for May.Brits were snapped sat in water fountains as they desperately tried to cool down.Weather forecasting agency Aemet described the mutant weather as “extraordinarily hot” and said it was “summer starting in the spring”.The area of Segovia smashed its record overnight temperatures and stayed above a sweltering 20C through the hours of darkness for the first time ever in May.Four regions throughout the country have even been placed on alert because the heat is so intense.The State Meteorological Agency said Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha is under a yellow alert as it is so hot people are at risk of choking.And coast-line region Andalusia was placed under an orange alert because there is a “significant” danger of overheating.Spokesperson Rubén del Campo said: "The last updates to the meteorological models confirm the extraordinary intensity of this heatwave."He added it may be "the most intense May heatwave of the past 20 years" for Spain as a whole.The blistering temperatures are set to cool down after the weekend across the western third of the country.Stay in the loop with all the Daily Star's latest news by signing up to one of our free newsletters here.Britain also looks set to enjoy some.
