'Blue balls' are real and not urban myth, says doc who warns men over bulging veins

READ MORE:Top 10 types of female orgasm – from the blended O to tantalising nippleMeanwhile others have claimed it isn't possible over the years, arguing that the condition is far from legitimate.Now Dr Sam Hay has explained that the "achy’" sensation is real, even though many claim that it's not.Despite his claims that the condition exists he said that the testicles don't actually go bright blue as the name would imply, but he said they can take on some kind of blue colour due to engorged veins.Speaking on Australian radio show KIIS 1065, Hay said: “I always thought blue balls was this urban myth that if you stay aroused for [too] long your balls will go blue and they’ll fall off and the only way to relieve it is to have some fun.“I thought it was a complete excuse for guys to get off - but it’s actually true.”Hay said that, during an erection, "pressure" can build in the testicles, but he said this is the result of an increase in blood flow as opposed to a painful build-up of semen, which is what some people think happens.He also noted that the medical term is known as "epididymal hypertension", adding: "If you become aroused for a long time, you get lots of blood going down to the testicles and it increases the pressure."If you don’t [ejaculate] then that pressure becomes achy." According to Lloyd's Pharmacy, a "classic case of blue balls" doesn't usually need medical treatment.It's said it can usually be relieved by masturbating, having sex or simply allowing the symptoms to pass on their own accord.
