Large indoor events should be banned until 2021, a senior epidemiologist has said. Adam Kucharski, an associate professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has warned that the virus could spread at an exponential rate if the lockdown is ended too early and certain events are allowed.

The Sir Henry Dale fellow fears infection rates could pick up significantly if people celebrate the easing of social distancing by coming together in large groups.

His research team found that the average rate of infection of one coronavirus carrier in a typical social setting is three people.
