Researchers also suggest that it could aid in developing new tests that will help identify the condition, which could see people receive diagnosis more effectively.
Right now, families often have to attend multiple hospital appointments for testing, with children put through several psychological tests which could be seen as a stressful ordeal.
The new research has revealed that 72 different genes are "very strongly" associated with autism and more than 250 with "strong links" to the condition.
