Two 'hedonistic' Audi drivers were racing at more than 80mph seconds before one of them ploughed into the former mayoress of Bolton.

Assad Hussain and Wasim Iqbal, both 23, were driving 'aggressively and competitively' along a 30mph stretch of Chorley New Road, in Bolton, just seconds before Gay Wharton was struck.

The 58-year-old was on a pedestrian crossing when she was hit. She died at the scene after suffering 'catastrophic injuries'.

The two men, both of whom have a string of driving convictions and have previously been banned from the roads, were jailed at Minshull Street Crown Court today (Monday, June 7).
