Alan Shearer has recalled being “90 per cent certain” he would join Manchester United before snubbing Sir Alex Ferguson to sign for hometown club Newcastle in 1996.
Shearer is one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history, scoring 130 goals in 171 appearances for Blackburn and helping the club win the title in 1995.
One year later he was hot property in England, with both United and his beloved Newcastle desperate to sign him. In the end Shearer chose to join the Magpies, where he would bag another 206 goals - while also becoming the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer.
