the horrifying missile attack on an oil depot in Saudi Arabia, fans have questioned whether a Formula 1 race should be taking place this weekend just a few miles away from the blast zone. The explosion took place during the first F1 practice session of the weekend, with smoke billowing into the sky that was visible from the coastal circuit.

Yemeni Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the strike, having also carried out a number of similar attacks on Saudi Arabia in the past. After meetings with team bosses and drivers, F1 officials have insisted that the Grand Prix weekend will be going ahead as planned with qualifying on Saturday and the race the day after. "We feel safe," the sport's chief Stefano Domenicali said as they pointed out that the oil firm Aramco is the target, not the racing event. All 10 team principals have backed the plan to continue, though there are whispers of discontentment among the drivers.

Some of the racers are said to have been unnerved by the attack, and are not so sure the Grand Prix should be going ahead as planned. It remains to be seen whether any of them will take action on their concerns, but as it stands the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will not be cancelled.

If F1 bosses were to U-turn on that decision, though, it wouldn't be the first time a race has been scrapped at the last moment.
