as it ages. When I met with renowned aesthetic expert, Dr David Jack, he could tell I slept on my left side. In terms of wrinkle formation, he went on to explain, it can have an impact, simply because of the sheer number of hours you’re exerting pressure on that side of your face over a lifetime (2,920 hours a year if you’re lucky enough to sleep for eight hours a night).
Given the weight of your head (around 5kg), it’s no wonder you’ll experience some creasing. If my pillowcase happens to be crumpled, I wake up with a ‘pillow scar’, which now takes longer to fade then it did when I was younger.
Embarrassingly, I once had to go to a breakfast meeting with it visible. Dr Jack has a theory that another factor may come into play: ‘It’s not proven but I suspect there’s a certain amount of microvascular compression, which decreases the blood flow and nutrition to those areas.’ So, if you want to improve your beauty sleep, it’s time to rethink your pillows.
I love soft feather varieties and crisp cotton pillowcases but they’re not conducive to sleeping on your back. An option I found comfortable is the Izmara Beauty Pillow (£80, or £135 with silk pillowcase, amazon.co.uk).
