Brits have been warned they could face fines as high as £210 for trying to call dibs on a sunbed while on holiday in Spain. Council leaders in the Costa Blanca resort in Calpe have said police will have the powers to remove any sunbeds or towels placed on the beach before 9.30am.
Anyone who is caught breaching the rules would have to retrieve any taken items from a municipal depot while paying a fine of 250 euros (£210).
Similarly, tourists who try to keep hold of a spot unattended for more than three hours will face similar penalties. A spokesperson highlighted that the reason for the rules is due to an increase in complaints the council has received over the summer period in the past few years.
Writing on X, a spokesperson said: "This measure prohibits the indiscriminate occupation of the public domain, especially the beach, with items such as chairs, hammocks and parasols at the start of the day. “These bad habits make it difficult to clean the beaches.
