While watching the thrilling Killing Eve series it is difficult to imagine someone as psychotic as Villanelle actually exists, but apparently the character is inspired by a real-life assassin.

According to author Luke Jennings who wrote the Villanelle crime series, which the BBC series is based on, the main character is based on a woman called Idoia López Riaño.

Idoia is otherwise known as La Tigresa, and was jailed for her involvement in the Basque separatist group, ETA. Luke spoke about his character choice during a Lyme Crime literary festival and why Villanelle was inspired by La Tigresa.

He said: ‘She killed 23 people, and she was clearly a psychopath and completely, completely without empathy.’ Yep, sounds like Villanelle alright.
