Social Security Scotland is responsible for paying two of the most important benefits that can help certain people with the cost of heating their home when the temperature drops - Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments.

We've created a handy guide to help you understand what each benefit is, how much they are worth, who is eligible and how to claim.

If you were born on or before October 5, 1954 you could get between £100 and £300 to help pay your heating bills - this is known as a ‘ Winter Fuel Payment ’.

You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you are eligible and you get the State Pension or another social security benefit -  but not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit.
