St Thomas’ Hospital in London, he remained in good spirits, telling jokes and working on his music with a laptop. Doctors still thought it was pneumonia – as Andy hadn’t been to Wuhan, nobody suspected it could be Covid-19 – but none of the treatments worked and the promised recovery never came.One night, when I’d barely eaten or slept for days, the nurses urged me to go home.

Andy seemed to be stable. I will never forgive myself for leaving his side.As I was walking into the hospital the following morning, a nurse rang to say Andy had been put in an induced coma.

Next thing I knew, I was running to his bedside, as if running could change the outcome. Andy’s condition continued to decline.
