A new generation of fighter planes that feature an artificially-intelligent robot “co-pilot” are being developed in a $4.8 million (£3.8m) US military project.
Officials of the US Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, announced on Wednesday the signing of a contract between the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and human-robot interface specialists SoarTech to develop AI systems for combat jets.
The Air Combat Evolution (ACE) project is set to bring a blend of human and machine intelligence to air combat. In future dogfights the human pilot will dictate overall strategy while the plane itself handles precise targeting and firing decisions, according to reports.
