The UK economy grew by 1.8% in May as activity began to recover as the coronavirus lockdown eased, the Office for National Statistics has said.
That follows a 19.1% collapse in the three months to May - with all the main sectors in the economy seeing massive drops. Despite that low base, May's increase of 1.8% was lower than the one seen in February - before lockdown came into effect.
Jonathan Athow, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics (ONS), said of the May economy figures: "Manufacturing and house-building showed signs of recovery as some businesses saw staff return to work.
