Large scale trials have begun on an 'on the spot' coronavirus test which can provide results in 20 minutes, the Government has said.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the test, which doesn't need to be sent to a lab, had already 'proven effective in early trials'.
Earlier this week the government announced anyone over the age of five who has Covid-19 symptoms is now eligible for testing.
And speaking at today's daily briefing Mr Hancock said if successful the test, produced by West Sussex-based Optigene, will be rolled out 'as soon as we can'.
