jail.56-year-old Phillip Hollis of Spellow Lane, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to endangering the safety of passengers when he appeared at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court last month.
Today he was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Liverpool Crown Court.He was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, pay a surcharge and £340 costs, and will have an electronically monitored curfew for three months.
Sentencing, Judge David Potter said Hollis was distracted by a combination of sending WhatsApp messages and leaning out of his cab to pick up a fallen bag.
He said: “It’s through sheer luck rather than judgement on your part that serious injury was not caused.“You accept that you were distracted by trying to retrieve your bag.
