Spain. The 20-month-old passed away after reportedly being hit in the head by a giant lump of falling ice. Around 50 other people are reported to have been hurt in the storms with everything from fractures down to bruises. One of the great balls of ice was measured at 10cm (4 inches) across - the largest to hit the region since 2002. Fire services around the town of Bisbal d'Emporda received some 40 calls on Tuesday nights from people reporting damage.

The child who was hit died despite being transferred to a hospital in the nearby city of Girona.
