The second was The Serpent, which told the true story of a group of beautiful, naïve young people falling prey to a serial killer on the hippy trail in the 1970s.The Serpent had its big-name stars – not least Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman as the psychopathic Charles Sobhraj and his accomplice, Marie-Andrée Leclerc – but in the end it was Billy Howle, playing the quiet, unsung Belgian diplomat Herman Knippenberg, who stole the show.His chain-smoking Knippenberg was increasingly obsessed, occasionally tortured and constantly on edge.
