So why the shift? It’s partly what we watch (personally, lockdown rendered my boxset habit a bit worrying). Up until recently, the costumes in new TV and film adaptations of classic stories made us fall in love with period fashion: Little Women sparked sales of vintage Laura Ashley dresses; The Handmaid’s Tale put caped dresses on the map; Emma translated into voluminous gowns in vivid colours on the catwalks.
