Glastonbury 2022 ticketholders who are planning to travel by train are being advised to make alternative arrangements as Great Britain faces its biggest rail strike since 1989.The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers Union (RMT) and National Rail’s nationwide strike was confirmed last week for the following days next week: Tuesday (June 21), Thursday (June 23) and Saturday (June 25).It means that those travelling to Pilton, Somerset for Glastonbury on its warm-up day on Wednesday (June 22) and its final day on Sunday (June 26), as well as the usual Monday (June 27) return travel day, will face disruption and a backlog from the strikes.Rail workers are striking over pay and redundancies. Separately, a strike is also planned on the London Underground on Tuesday (June 21), which is part of a different dispute over job losses and pensions and could also affect people heading to Glastonbury early.Steve Montgomery, who chairs the Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators, has now advised ticketholders to plan their journeys carefully.“Working with Network Rail, our plan is to keep as many services running as possible but significant disruption will be inevitable and some parts of the network will not have a service, so passengers should plan their journeys carefully and check their train times,” he said in a statement [via The Guardian].A special, reduced timetable will be in operation from Monday (June 20) until Sunday (June 26).

Glastonbury Festival may have to reconsider their travel plans as national rail strikes were confirmed for three days in late June.The RMT union announced that “over 50,000 railway workers will walkout as part of 3 days of national strike action later this month, in the biggest dispute on the network since 1989”.The nationwide strikes are due to take place on June 21, 23 and 25, which means that those travelling to Worthy Farm for the festival from June 22-26 may face disruption.Other events affected the same week include the British athletics championships in Manchester, and Elton John and The Rolling Stones‘ BST Hyde Park concerts.RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Railway workers have been treated appallingly and despite our best efforts in negotiations, the rail industry with the support of the government has failed to take their concerns seriously.“We have a cost-of-living crisis, and it is unacceptable for railway workers to either lose their jobs or face another year of a pay freeze when inflation is at 11.1% and rising. Our union will now embark on a sustained campaign of industrial action which will shut down the railway system.”He continued: “Rail companies are making at least £500m a year in profits, whilst fat cat rail bosses have been paid millions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Glastonbury Festival has announced that this year’s event will feature a huge sculpture that will be set alight at the end of the weekend.Attendees will be invited to write messages about things they wish to let go of on a 40 foot lotus sculpture that was created by artist Joe Rush and his team out of salvaged wood and canvas. Notting Hill Carnival and Glastonbury have teamed up together for a new collaboration in the Block9 area of the festival.Block9, the legendary “late-night” area of Glastonbury are creating a ‘home base’ for the Notting Hill carnival crew in their Block9 East field. Glastonbury has donated land to allow for an additional 20 social homes to be built in Pilton, Somerset.Michael Eavis, co-creator of the legendary festival, made the gesture on the condition that the homes would serve the local community in perpetuity, according to a post on Glastonbury’s official website.The move will bring the total number of homes for the project, which was started by Eavis back in 1996, to 52.Sharing the news on Twitter today (May 5), Glasto organisers posted a photograph of Eavis breaking ground on the new development during a celebratory event held by housing association The Guinness Partnership.Guinness is working with the contractor EG Carter & Co Ltd who has begun work on site.
