SIR Cliff Richard today reveals how beatings from his dad affected him. The Mistletoe and Wine star, 80, was clouted round the head by Rodger Webb while growing up in India with his three sisters.

Cliff tells BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs today: “It bordered on being a bit fearful. “I think sometimes if you end up admiring someone it’s because they’re strong.

I was a bit afraid of upsetting him. “If he clouted me round the head ’cos I did something wrong, we’d all take it in turns to run to mum.” Cliff was just 20 when Rodger died at 56 from complications with thrombosis.
