The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is back for 2023 and is set to be bigger and better than ever. The walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school challenge will run from Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 31.This challenge aims to inspire pupils to get active on their journeys to school while also improving air quality in their neighbourhood.Open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK, including SEN/ASN/ALN schools, the challenge is free to take part in and there are daily prizes to be won.
Registering your school only takes a couple of minutes and there are lots of resources, including curriculum-linked lesson plans, to guide you along the way.
Dr Cecilia Oram, Head of Behaviour Change at Sustrans, said: “It’s no secret that walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting to and from school is fantastic for children’s health and wellbeing.
An active commute also means less traffic and pollution, making the streets around schools safer for pupils, families and staff.“By encouraging more young people to make active journeys, schools can instil lifelong habits that lead to happier, healthier communities.
