Rio Ferdinand has recalled the moment he knew it was all over for Ruud van Nistelrooy under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Defender Ferdinand had played with Van Nistelrooy for almost four seasons when the Dutchman had begun to lose his place in the team under Ferguson, with the Scot prioritising the talents of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in attack.
In February 2006, Ferguson opted to leave Van Nistelrooy on the bench for the League Cup final against Wigan in Cardiff, with Rooney, Ronaldo and Louis Saha all scoring in a 4-0 win.
