Manchester City and Real Madrid footballer Robinho after he was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape.In 2017, Robinho and five other men were found guilty of raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub in January 2013.Last month, the Court of Cassation in Rome rejected the ex-footballer's last-ditch appeal against his conviction.
The Supreme Court’s ruling cannot be challenged and is definitive. Now Italian officials have requested their counterparts in Brazil extradite the star so he can serve jail time. However, the South American country's constitution does not allow the extradition of its citizens. This makes the likelihood of Robinho serving any actual time in jail appear slim.
However, the former City forward risks being arrested if he enters one of the nearly 70 countries Italy has an agreement with under an international warrant.
During his appeal, Robinho, who was playing for AC Milan at the time of the incident, did admit to having 'contact' with the woman. But he insisted it was consensual and has always denied the charge against him.
