Prisons in the UK face a 'public health catastrophe' if low-risk prisoners are not released, a charity has warned. The government is facing calls to release low-risk prisoners early in order to curb the spread of coronavirus in UK jails.
Dr Kate Paradine, chief executive of charity Women in Prison said staff levels in prisons "have buckled already" amid the pandemic, and the situation is "getting worse".
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour she said releasing low-risk prisoners was "the right thing to do". She warned that the UK faces 'catastrophe' if a plan to release prisoners is not put in place soon. “We will have to do it," she told the programme. "Our prisons have buckled already on critical staffing levels and getting worse.
