Princess Anne is to march into military history and become the first woman to head the Royal Marines - replacing Prince Harry, who held the post for less than two years.
The appointment of the Princess Royal, currently serving as an honorary Admiral in the Royal Navy, is listed to be announced in August after officially being endorsed by the Queen.Harry quit the prestigious Royal Marines job after marrying Megan and moving to the States - leaving the Queen no option but to strip him of his military titles.As an honorary Admiral in the Royal Navy and married to a naval officer, Admiral Sir Tim Lawrence, the Princess Royal is very familiar with military life.The move to appoint her comes as members of the Royal family prepare to take on more roles following the removal of all military titles from Prince Harry and Prince Andrew.The Daily Star Sunday understands that a number of new military appointments will be announced by Buckingham Palace which will see Princess Anne heading the marines and potentially at least two new Army roles.Harry was assigned the appointment of Captain-General of the Royal Marines by his grandfather, Prince Philip, but quit in order to take up a new life in the United States with his wife Meghan.Following the departure of Harry and Andrew from the military many regiments - such as the marines, the Grenadier Guards, the Irish Rangers and the Yorkshire regiment have been left without an honorary head.The Princess Royal, aged 70, already heads ten regiments including Colonel in Chief of the King’s Royal Hussars, the Royal Scots, The Gurkhas and the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.As Captain-General of the 350-year-old Corps, the Princess will be expected to visit young marines in training, attend.
