The Premier League have been warned they’ll be “a patsy for sportswashing an abysmal human rights record” if they approve a Saudi-funded takeover for Newcastle United.
Amnesty International have written to league chiefs who are currently deciding if a proposed £300m buyout should go ahead. Newcastle could be in the hands of financier Amanda Staveley, and her consortium, in the next three weeks if the Premier League give their approval.
But Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK Director, wrote: “We’re absolutely not saying who should end up running Newcastle United, but unless the Premier League pauses and looks seriously at the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia it risks becoming a patsy - a willing dupe of those trying to sportswash
