The Premier League has responded to Amnesty International's raised concerns about a potential Saudi Arabia-funded takeover for Newcastle United.
Amnesty International had written to the Premier League urging them to prevent the consortium backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund from completing the £300million takeover.
The fund is chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has been criticised previously for his human rights record. The takeover is expected to be completed by May 1, providing the proposed new ownership passes the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test, designed to ensure parties “meet standards greater than that required under law so as to protect the reputation and image of the game”.
