Steven George Gerrard MBE (born 30 May 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who manages Scottish Premiership club Rangers.

He spent the majority of his playing career as a central midfielder for Liverpool, with most of that time spent as club captain, as well as captaining the England national team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time,

Gerrard was awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in 2005, and the Ballon d'Or Bronze Award. In 2009, Zinedine Zidane and Pelé said that they considered Gerrard to be the best footballer in the world.

Premier League referees given new guidelines for players showing support for Ukraine

Ukraine following the invasion of the Eastern European country by Russia. Russia launched an attack across multiple fronts last Thursday but Ukraine, led by hero president Volodymyr Zelensky, has put up fierce resistance.As well as receiving aid from a host of countries across the world, Ukraine has also been supported by protests, from both the public and in professional football.That has included in the Premier League, with clubs holding up banners calling for peace ahead of the round of games in the weekend just gone.Some have voiced their support of Ukraine more strongly, with Everton and Manchester City players draping themselves in the country’s flag ahead of Saturday evening’s clash.Aston Villa star and Poland international Matty Cash celebrated his goal against Brighton by removing his shirt to show a message of solidarity for international team-mate Tomasz Kedziora, who players for Dynamo Kyiv.Cash was subsequently booked by referee John Brooks for removing his shirt, which is considered unsporting behaviour in the Laws of the Games.The fullback would not have been cautioned had he merely raised his shirt to show the message, which read “TK and Family Stay Strong My Bro”.But according to the Daily Mail, referees have now been encouraged to show ‘understanding and empathy’ towards any player who has chosen to show their support for Ukraine.Protests at Premier League grounds are set to continue if Russia fails to pull back to their own territory.Villa boss Steven Gerrard had taken responsibility for Cash’s booking, but will likely be relieved that referees will take a softer stance.Want to be on the ball with all of the latest football news?Well then sign up for the brilliant Daily Star football email.
