'Possible crimes against humanity' by Russian forces in Ukraine now under investigation

It comes after Ukraine and its allies called for a United Nations inquiry into potential war crimes carried out by Russia on Monday, February 28.In a tweet written by Dan Linden of ABC News, he posted a statement from a Criminal Court prosecutor that confirmed an investigation will be launched as "rapidly as possible".

The tweet, which includes a screenshot of the statement reads: "Today, I wish to announce that I have decided to proceed with opening an investigation into the situation in Ukraine, as rapidly as possible."I am satisfied that there is a reasonable basis to believe that both alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed."I will continue to closely follow developments on the ground in Ukraine and again call for restraint and strict adherence to the applicable rules of international humanitarian law."On Sunday (February 27), Ukraine’s health ministry reported that a total of 352 civilians have died, while 1,684 people, including 116 children, have been injured.

It is believed that at least 400,000 civilians have managed to escape to neighbouring countries.The TASS news agency announced that Vladimir Putin has issued orders for Russia's nuclear deterrent forces to be switched to 'high alert' as tensions build with western countries.The president was met with Ukrainian resistance on the weekend which has led to a peace talk between Moscow and Kyiv on Belarusian-Ukrainian border.
