Hot genre filmmaker Zach Cregger and his Barbarian collaborators have sold yet another mysterious feature project to New Line, following the auction of their horror, Weapons.

Barbarian producer BoulderLight Pictures has secured a multi-year first-look feature agreement with New Line Cinema, Deadline has confirmed.

One of the best surprises of 2022 has to be “Barbarian.” Not only is it surprising because of the story, which completely catches people off guard with its smart writing and fun twists, but the film also shocks people when they find out that Zach Cregger is the writer-director.

New Line Cinema won a heated auction to win Weapons, a film it will fast track with the filmmaking team behind the horror thriller Barbarian. Zach Cregger wrote the script and will direct, and he’ll produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

Justin Long has been cast as a series regular in Goosebumps, Disney+’s live-action series based on R.L. Stine’s bestselling books, Deadline has confirmed. The new version hails from Scholastic Entertainment, the media division of Scholastic, Neal H. Moritz, producer of the Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2 films, and Sony Pictures TV.

Their most recently announced project is an animated film named “Mars,” which was in development before the 2021 death of member Trevor Moore. During the press cycle of his latest directorial effort, “Barbarian,” WKUK member Zach Cregger gave an update on the project. “We had written a movie called ‘Mars’ and the plan was always for it to be an animated feature,” Cregger said. “Before Trevor died, we recorded all of his dialogue, and we’ve crowdfunded the budget for this movie. It’s like $300,000, a little more. And we’re currently making it, I think we’re going to wrap it up in about a month or so and I think it’s great.”

“Barbarian” is nasty. Whether you take that as a positive or a negative will be an entirely personal thing, but it’ll be a word that people on both sides of the opinion aisle will likely use to describe it.

Or take the mix-up as a sign and get the heck out? In “Barbarian,” Tess (Georgina Campbell) makes the wrong decision. It’s already late, and she decides to stay — this despite the fact that the stranger sharing the house is played by Bill Skarsgård (the actor who embodied Pennywise in the recent “It” remake). For audiences, this casting is a clue Tess is in for a scary stay. But it would be wrong to think you have “Barbarian” figured out. For Tess, there are plenty of other red flags in the way her unexpected roommate behaves. Should she really believe they double-booked the same place in a derelict Detroit neighborhood? Or is there another reason he’s there? What if he’s some kind of rapist or axe murderer? Is the flimsy lock on her bedroom enough to protect her should he turn violent? Tess does have certain survival instincts (she’s sharp enough to decline a drink from this guy, who calls himself “Keith”), and she has empathy, too, which will become kind of a defining characteristic later on, when things get super-crazy and you just want her to get out of town as fast as possible.
