Wayne Mardle's 'head fell off' seeing how low down rankings Michael van Gerwen could drop
darts rankings Michael van Gerwen could drop. The Dutchman was world number one for seven years from 2014 onwards but lost the title last year following Gerwyn Price's World Championship win.Van Gerwen has since slipped down to third as a result of a dip in form and headed into this weekend's UK Open in that position. However, with a prize fund of £450,000 on offer, and the winner receiving £100k of that, there was a slim chance that he could fall down to as low as sixth in the rankings. When this was pointed out to Sky Sports pundit Mardle, he wrote on social media: "After vigorous shaking…my head has just fallen off."Van Gerwen has since avoided that fate, though, by beating Gary Anderson 10-7 on Day One on Friday.Anderson, who is the current sixth-ranked player, would have had to have won the whole competition in order to have climbed above Van Gerwen. Are you backing Van Gerwen to win the UK Open? Gerwyn Price’s boxing debut falls days before Darts Premier League match vs Peter Wright
darts world champion Gerwyn Price is making his boxing debut later this year but will need to refocus quickly as he faces Peter Wright in the Premier League just a few days later. The multi-talented 36-year-old revealed on Instagram that he'll step into the ring with Rhys 'Cool Fly & Flashy' Evans in his native Wales on April 9, before returning to the oche the following week.Price admitted that he needs to drop some weight for the fight, telling followers: "Need to drop 10kg for this."Speaking to Sky Sports following his 6-3 victory over Michael Smith on night 3 of the Premier League in Belfast, Price confessed that he was worried about "looking stupid"."One of my mates was an ex-boxer and a very good pro, so I’ve got to get some training in and get myself ready otherwise I’m going to look stupid," he said.Remarkably, this isn't the first time The Iceman has switched sports.Price played rugby union and rugby league professionally and even scored a try in a cup final at the Millennium Stadium, before officially joining the darts circuit in 2014.He became the first Welshman to win the PDC World Championship in 2021, beating Scotland's Gary Anderson 7-3 in the final at Alexandra Palace, becoming World No 1 in the process. Will Gerwyn Price get battered in the ring? Premier League Darts players' old jobs - from postie to pro rugby player and the dole
Darts stars are now enjoying this adrenaline rush each Thursday night in cities across the UK.But being paid to throw darts in front of raucous crowds is a remarkable contrast to the traditional jobs many players used to have. And as we approach night three of the Cazoo Premier League at The SSE Arena in Belfast, we take a look at the different gigs these darting pros paid their bills with before making it to the oche.Peter Wright’s name is now indelible in darting history after becoming a two-time world champion earlier this year. And despite now being a multi-millionaire, his journey to the top has been rocky. He said goodbye to the sport not long after qualifying for his first World Darts Championship in 1995.Desperate for cash, he fitted windows, hauled concrete fence posts and grafted on building sites and holiday camps. He then had a stint on the dole before returning to darts almost 20 years after his first appearance. And Wright - who also changed his name to 'Snakebite' - is now reaping the rewards.Who will win this year's Premier League? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section belowUnlike many of his fellow pros, Jonny Clayton has refused to become a full-time darts player – despite winning four premier events last year, including the Premier League. He still earns money on the side as a part-time plasterer even though he claimed £400,000 in prize money in 2021.But the humble Welshman still puts in a shift for Carmarthenshire County Council. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Star last month, he said: "I would be a liar to say I have not considered it.

Former darts world champion Bob Anderson once walked on stage with a live horse
darts stars, the walk-on is a key part of proceedings with well-known tunes blasting out at Ally Pally or Circus Tavern to set up the tense affair. As fans slap, rub and hi-five their favourite tungsten throwers, walk-on girls throw sweet shapes from the front of the stage before it's down to business for the quickfire contest. From the current era, darts fans will be used to Michael Van Gerwen's famous Seven Nation Army walk-on or Peter Wright's entrance to Pitbull's Don't Stop The Party. But neither MVG nor Snakewright can compete with Bob Anderson's legendary walk-on at the 1995 World Championship. The three-time World Masters champion made unparalleled ground by introducing a live horse when making his approach to the oche. The Limestone Cowboy is still fondly remembered for his unorthodox walk-on choice, though it's unlikely to be repeated due to updated health and safety regulations."I still get people coming up to me asking if I’m the guy that walked on with the horse," Anderson told sportsgazette.HAVE YOUR SAY!
