Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Experimental music film “Pavements” and offbeat comedy “Nightbitch” are among five titles designated as ‘headliners’ of the film section on the upcoming SXSW Sydney festival. “Pavements,” which premiered in Venice, is an experimental hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual elements from director Alex Ross Perry about the indie rock outfit, Pavement.“Nightbitch,” which debuted in Toronto, is a darkly comedic fairy tale about a stay-at-home mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, who transforms into a dog. Others getting the gala treatment include Max & Sam Eggers’ new A24 horror “The Front Room,” starring pop star Brandy as a newly-pregnant woman facing off against her mother-in-law; “Smile 2,” by Parker Finn; and Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live.” “These bold, hilarious, captivating and thrilling films lead a program not just for film fans, but the tech, music, and games audiences that form the rich tapestry of the SXSW Sydney audience,” said Colin Daniels, MD, SXSW Sydney. The festival, a spin-off from the U.S. South by Southwest festival, and which shares PMC corporate ownership with Variety, is in its second year Down Under.

Robert Pattinson is getting involved in what is shaping up to be a high-profile remake of a cult classic horror movie.

Robert Pattison is continuing to build out his producing slate as he is on board to produce a remake of the 1981 horror movie Possession, with Smile director Parker Finn on board to direct. Sources say that as of now Pattinson is only on board to produce, not star.

Paramount Pictures has entered a multi-year, first-look deal with Parker Finn to write, produce and direct features.  The pact comes on the heels of Finn’s breakout horror hit “Smile,” which became a sleeper box office sensation. Finn wrote and directed the creepy tale, which went on to be the top grossing original horror movie of 2022, raking in $216 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. It was based on his short film “Laura Hasn’t Slept.” “‘Smile’s’breakthrough success is a testament to Parker’s unique and fresh filmmaking, and we are thrilled that he will make Paramount his home,” said Paramount Pictures President & CEO Brian Robbins.

Paramount Pictures has hammered a multi-year, first-look deal with Parker Finn to write, produce and direct features. 

Writing and directing a short is a potential passageway to creating a full-length feature film.

And while pundits largely put the film’s success down to Parker Finn’s spooky premise and a razor-sharp marketing campaign, its secret sauce is arguably Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s inventive score. Built around an obscure instrument that mimics human growls and groans, the otherworldly soundscape adds a layer of dread to “Smile” that lingers long after the credits roll. “Besides being the creepiest score of the year, Parker wanted it to be original,” Tapia de Veer says of the director’s original brief. To achieve that formidable goal, the Chilean-born composer knew that he had to sidestep the genre’s obsession with synthesizers. “In the last few years, there has been an obsession with retro sounds from the ’80s,” he says. “It’s very hard to plug in a synthesizer and not sound like John Carpenter when you start doing creepy things.”

Paramount’s Parker Finn-directed horror pic Smile has laughed its way across the $100M mark globally. And it did so in under two weeks of release. Through Tuesday, the gross is $102.3M worldwide, made up of $55.5M domestic and $46.8M from the international box office. 

Paramount’s Smile is positively grinning ear-to-ear as the horror pic from director Parker Finn saw a wild 19% upswing in holdovers at the international box office in its second frame. The weekend gross was $17.5M in 61 markets for a $40M offshore cume and $89.9M global to date.

For the second week in a row, Paramount Pictures' R-rated horror flick Smile topped the weekend box office in the States with $49.9M in 3,659 theaters for a global total of $89.9M.Parker Finn's $17M-budget feature directorial debut - based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn't Slept - stars Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's daughter Sosie Bacon.The 30-year-old actress plays psychiatrist Dr. Rose Cotter, who believes something supernatural is at work after witnessing the bizarre suicide of a patient as well as other disturbing experiences.
