Maggie Rogers has finally met the fan who posted the viral video with Pharrell Williams that launched her music career.In 2016, a clip went viral of Pharrell marvelling at Rogers’ song ‘Alaska’ during a songwriting masterclass at New York University.“I have zero, zero, zero notes for that,” he said in the video, being visibly moved by the song. “I’ve never heard anyone like you before, and I’ve never heard anything that sounds like that.”The video was uploaded by a fan named Dimitri to Reddit, with Rogers then going on to sign to a major label, release two albums and headline gigs across the world.“So obviously my career started seven years ago with that video of me and Pharrell Williams at NYU blah blah blah,” she told fans in a video message posted to Instagram.

NME caught up with Courteeners‘ Liam Fray backstage at Glastonbury 2023, where the frontman told us about the impact of playing the festival and what to expect from the two new albums on the way.The Manchester indie veterans were up against Foo Fighters’ secret Pyramid Stage set as The Churnups, but still pulled an impressive crowd to their early evening set on Woodsies – formerly known as The John Peel Tent.“Eighth time lucky, it was pretty special,” Fray told NME after their set. “That was the most nervous I’ve ever been for a show.

The 22-year-old music extravaganza kicked off Europe’s festival season with its four-night bow in Barcelona this past weekend. Featuring multiple headliners – Blur, Halsey, Kendrick Lamar, Depeche Mode, New Order, Calvin Harris and Rosalia — on side-by-side interchanging stages, some 70,000 revelers attended daily, taking in the grounds of the city’s Parc del Forum and its myriad entertainment, activity and food options (including a full Primavera Pro conference track for industry attendees).  While at a map’s glance, it seemed as if acts on the smaller stages would drown each other out, the organizers choreographed the schedule so expertly that any conflicts didn’t feel insurmountable. It also helped that there were 317 acts to choose from, spread out over 10 stages and as many acres lining the city’s port. According to the fest, 193,000 attended Primavera’s three main days, with the largest crowd gathering for the final night where the main draw was Spain’s own Rosalia — evident from the scores of fans wearing red and black, the colors of her latest project, “Motomami.” 

Maggie Rogers has confirmed that she has finished writing and recording her third album.As revealed in a new Instagram post, the follow-up to last year’s ‘Surrender’ LP was laid down at Electric Lady Studios in New York.“That’s a wrap on LP3 !!!!” she told fans, adding that the album was “written + recorded + off to mixing.”Alongside photos and videos from the studio – including a tiny snippet of new music presumably taken from the album – Rogers added: “So so so in love with these songs and cannot wait to start playing them for you this summer.”This summer, she will head out on her biggest US tour to date, that will see her playing alongside Soccer Mommy and Alvvays.Rogers recently brought her ‘Feral Joy’ tour to United States in support of ‘Surrender’, and since then detailed new dates for summer.Ahead of the tour, the singer hosted a pre-sale window of in-person ticket sales at box offices before regular online sales begin.She explained on Instagram: “There’s a lot of conversation right now about combatting bots and making sure tickets get directly into the hands of fans, and at a reasonable price. Ticketing fees have never been higher and a lot of people, me included, are justifiably frustrated and concerned.“I’ve been thinking about this over the last few months and wanted to provide you with another option.

Ari Herstand Last week, I went to see one of my favorite artists, Theo Katzman, play the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Theo, who I recently featured on the New Music Business podcast, is a completely independent artist — no label; no manager.  I wanted to avoid the exorbitant service fees tacked onto the tickets when purchasing online, so I showed up to the Wiltern’s box office the moment it opened on show day to snag (what I thought would be) a $30 “face value” ticket. However, when it came time to pay, the clerk told me that it would be $35. “There’s a $5 per ticket service fee added” she explained.  I asked her, “How can I avoid the service fee?” She replied: “You can’t.”

In the announcement for the show, The Strokes shared a signup link for presale along with details that the general sale will take place on Friday.Other acts set to perform this year at the Queen’s tennis venue include Maggie Rogers, Weezer, IDLES, LCD Soundsystem, Arctic Monkeys and boygenius.

The new season will feature around 30 music and comedy acts including Boygenius, the Strokes, Duran Duran, Dave Matthews Band, LCD Soundsystem, Fall Out Boy, Zach Bryan, Kevin Hart, Maggie Rogers, Weezer, Lane 8, The Smile, Arctic Monkeys, Jungle, plus the inaugural Head In The Clouds New York Music & Arts Festival and the return of Rock the Bells Festival, celebrating the 50th year of hip hop. Additionally, The New York Pops – the 78-musician independent pop orchestra will perform with Jason Mraz. The full lineup to date appears below; more shows will be announced in the coming weeks.
